Working With a Design Brief in the Visual Art Classroom

Working With a Design Brief in the Visual Art Classroom: Supporting Second Level Students to Make Collaborative Artwork Through Facilitated Group Discussions and Problem-Based Tasks.

This research project aimed to examine the extent to which facilitated group discussions and problem-based tasks can support students to explore design solutions in response to a design brief. The project as set out tasked students to creatively engage with nature and develop proposals for a collaborative relief clay tile wall piece, such as the kind of design brief that would be commissioned by the county council. The overall concept of the project was to reflect the flow of the river and was outlined within the design brief. The students were presented with a series of problem-based tasks to facilitate them in responding to the brief. The tasks presented were (i) create an individual design in response to the design brief (ii) arrange the individual designs as a whole class (using facilitated group discussion) to form one collaborative design (iii) develop the whole class design (iv) realise the designs in air-drying clay.
