What is my body if not a mannequin to perform femininity with?
Jessie is a Limerick-based artist whose work almost always is surrounded by the ideas of femininity and the female body. The installation is a careful mash-up of feminist theory, teenage bedroom type aesthetics and modern-day internet culture. Her degree show is installed in a maximalist manner, with a large element of installation and domesticity throughout her show.
Her primary practices are a mixture of acrylic paint on wood, sewing, printing and collage. The palette of the work is comprised mainly of pinks, purples and blues. Her work shows a complex relationship with living in a female body, particularly through a modern day lens where everything is shared and documented via phones and the internet. There is an element of satire mixed into the heavily stylised portraits. Her hopes are that everyone can find something to relate to in the personal experiences she is sharing of body autonomy, life as a woman (when you aren’t even sure what that means sometimes) and a sarcastic, not-too-serious attitude.
