The impact of discovery learning on students’ – self efficacy in the art room
This research report illustrates the impact of discovery learning on students’ self – efficacy in the art classroom. The aims of this project were to understand the importance of choice on students’ autonomy, understand the role of the teacher in supporting students’ through the discovery learning process, and to understand the factors that influence students’ ability to embrace, experience and overcome failure. This research project was conducted through a theoretical action research framework, over the duration of a ten week school placement.
The key findings of this research state, firstly the importance of meaningful art projects that enable students to develop a defined understanding of their autonomy, and the power of the experience of choice on students’ autonomy. Furthermore, the findings state the importance of the role of the teacher in assisting students’ to develop confidence; why a balance must be conducted through demonstration and questioning. Finally, the findings state the importance of independence and how this enables students to embrace and experience failure confidently, and the importance of self – reflection commencing failure and the impact this has on students’ understanding through the discovery learning process.
