To what extent can Google Sketchup enhance students’ three dimensional Ceramic Design skills for Ceramic Construction?
“Creativity is about allowing yourself to make mistakes, design is about knowing which ones are innovative enough to keep”. (Scott Adams)
We are living in a time where digital technology is far more accessible to use as a design aid within our society; however it is not being used for educational purposes within the Irish Art Curriculum. This research project examined the extent to which a 3D digital design program called Google Sketchup can enhance a student’s ability to learn skills in ceramic design. An action research approach was taken throughout the project where ongoing analyses of data informed subsequent actions. Research data was gathered in the form of interviews, surveys, diary entries, and photographs. Throughout the project students were challenged when converting their 3D Sketchup model to clay. Students working from a 3D digital design program encouraged problem solving and conceptual thinking during the clay construction process. Students’ Sketchup models took on an evolutionary design process during the project in order to meet the aesthetic properties of clay.
