Light, Steel and Space. A symbiosis.

My work utilises geometric bodies, industrial materials and saturated red light to seek out and unveil the unknown spaces and forms that encompass us.

Being the son of a labourer, I grew up on construction sites, unfinished and un-realised spaces. Exposed to an extensive set of construction materials from a young age I naturally garnered an understanding and admiration for these bodies. My extensive use of concrete, steel and geometric forms derive themselves from this foundation that is my upbringing.

These materials incorporate ideas around fluidity and movement which conflicts with their intrinsic values. Large bars of metal contort to soft, and sometimes elaborate, curves which flow through the space it occupies. This allows us to rethink these materials as perhaps forms which hold potential as hosts for creative input and not simply as products for structure.

I fuse these materials and forms with deep red light which acts as a tool to highlight the spaces and forms I wish to bring to our attention. The red hue allows itself to separate from its surrounding and direct itself to where I want to uncover. As well as this, the red light portrays feelings of imposition and occupancy which can change the tone of the space it resides within.

This pairing of the tangible and intangible to seek out the unseen creates a beautifully symbiotic partnership between these two contrasting bodies of material.
