As an artist-teacher, I have a goal to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where all learners feel valued and inspired to reach their full potential. Among this goal, the rationale of this project is to promote the idea of repurposing materials and encourage learners to express themselves confidently. As learners were encouraged to collaborate on the project, they were able to share ideas and create more unique designs. This approach taught them the importance of communication and cooperation in achieving goals while fostering their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Through the process, they were able to explore new knowledge and experiment with the technique to create 3D forms, thicknesses and textures.
This project also provided my perspectives as an artist-teacher in the classroom for my research “Teaching Visual Art at Post-Primary School: How can I motivate students to sustain interest in a project idea and bring it to completion?” The findings of this study advocate for the implementation of student-directed learning in secondary-level education in the visual arts curriculum through the practice of observation, review, and analysis to acquire learning growth while evaluating pedagogical techniques.
