This work is a celebration of the damaged. My drawings focus in particular at the physical scarring of skin and imperfections of the skin such as birthmarks and blemishes. Scarred skin and birthmarks are often seen in today’s society as “imperfect”. However, these imperfections are what make people individual and unique and they are part of what surviving means. It is in my opinion that these imperfections should be appreciated and considered beautiful.
Not only does the intricate style of my work portray the vulnerability and delicateness of our bodies, it high lights the incredible healing abilities are bodies have. Each scar has a history of its own, and are a perpetual reminder of how our bodies can adapt, change and endure. Every scar should be appreciated and distinguished.
In these drawings the scar is separated from the person inflicted and the surrounding skin. From this separation, I aim to coax the viewer into considering the aesthetic qualities of this subject matter that they may have once avoided before.
