Dylan Ryan

Fourth Wall; Follow Spot

Dylan Ryan’s practice explores the artist in production as theatre. Framing the artist as an actor in preparation, the work reveals the areas of creation that the audience does not typically see. Using a tactic of pre-show rituals, the artist showcases the efforts put in before work is displayed, spotlighting areas of expanded arts practice.

Exploring the breakdown of the processes they use to make work in studio, the artist uses analogue photography, printmaking, and performance to capture the activities and cycles that our bodies learn in practice. Influenced by the theatre of the absurd and artistic processes, the artist adopts these strategies for their work by emulating rehearsal and practice methods.

Through performative installation, Dylan Ryan reflects the work of an active artist in their workspaces; communal rituals of creatives are brought to the stage in thrust. Artists are apotheosised matching the efforts of their practice and work, positioned in the spotlight.
