The most fantastic and impossible rock in the world: Skellig Michael George Bernard Shaw, 1910

Having visited Skellig Michael on numerous occasions I was struck by how its early inhabitants used the limited raw materials available to them to settle and live on this “Impossible Rock”.

Influenced by the monks’ use of the landscape around them, I source and process raw materials locally.   I use these materials to glaze and decorate my wheel thrown, functional pieces.  Their forms are influenced by the restricted living spaces of the monks and are designed with apartment and small home living in mind.

Working in this way combines my love of being outdoors with my interest in glaze alchemy. The challenges I encounter instil in me a respect for the materials I use and the craft I incorporate them into. Some of the outcome must be left to chance and to the whims of these naturally sourced elements.
