My collection was inspired by ‘The Glasgow Girls’, key figure being Margaret Macdonald, and her husband, Charles Rennie Mackintosh who had a strong influence on the Art Nouveau movement in Europe during the years 1890 – 1920. I shaped my collection through pieces of art, interior design and architecture in the Glasgow style by using reoccurring colours and developing motifs from structured shapes and lines and then translated that into various forms of Knitwear.
While using these elements as inspiration, my collection was formed around sportswear and street style aesthetic. I experimented with different yarns, such as cottons, acrylics, and elastics to create different textures and weights throughout my garments while also paying attention to sports brands target audiences.
Through strong graphics, geometric figuration and bold colours within Margaret MacDonald and Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work I was able to develop my collection around this aesthetic, while reinventing knitwear’s association to sport.
