‘Puppet to Pain’

For my final collection I took inspiration from my mom and her disability. Scoliosis is the curvature of the spine; it has altered the shape of her back and body over time. I wanted to emulate this through cut and fabric manipulation. My mom describes her pain ‘like a string pulling her spine in different directions’. I incorporated a pulling string technique that gathers the fabric and therefore highlights the pain throughout the body. The colours used in my collection are derived from bruising and discolouration on the skin. The contrast between fabric weight illustrates the harshness of back braces used to correct the spine and the fragility of the skin and body.
