Artists, Locality, Community, Art

This qualitative research project set out to examine to what extent can engagement with local artists, community and locality, enrich student’s appreciation of the built environment and professional artist practice’s. Through exploration of community amenities and insights from local community members, student’s appreciation of their local built environment was enhanced.  The project included invited artist talks and presentations within the classroom, along with visiting local artist’s studios to understand the authentic working life and context of visual art production. This process extended students awareness of the professional life and career choices within the arts, while also encouraged the development of new insights into how the local environment can be seen and used as a starting point for creative engagement.

Through first hand examination of local artists work and by engaging in conversation with artists, students developed their own practical art skills in drawing, ceramics and digital media. Through extending and reimagining the traditional context and delivery of core skills sets in the Art & Design curriculum such as drawing and ceramics, this project allowed students to expand upon prior knowledge, while also increasing appreciation of local practitioners and the value of what was available as primary research material within the immediate environment.
