 A Facet of Emotional Regulation

In my art, I am exploring questions of identity and emotional responses.

Emotions have a multifaced nature linking how we behave and process our day to day. Reflecting on visual imagery, I temporarily blur the concept of human identity, obscuring the persona. I essentially explore the impact of the perceptible exterior and the manifestation of expression.

As a facet of emotional regulation, I construct masks distorting the recognition of the perception of oneself. Becoming a display of nonverbal behaviour, evoking a controlled narrative. Corresponding a visual dialect that silently performs a position of a state of being.  A psychological defence, encoding emotional expression, illustrating the curated or false personas embodied daily.

Using depictions of the familiar in unfamiliar ways, they are meant to encourage contemplation. Becoming living portraits that question the importance of perfection of the human appearance. Provoking a thought on the significance of permeance, unfolding a process of emotion perception.

No longer purely representational, but free to become a medium of psychological interpretation. Showing levels of intimacy and vulnerability – Realizing the deception of the concealment of the masks.
