Public Art; site specific work inspired by visual and literary art forms
Public Art; site specific work inspired by visual and literary art forms, is a self-created NCCA Short Course that was piloted with a 2nd year class of girls in the Mercy College Sligo. This was a ten week project whereby students were requested to make a relief tile mural for a specific site on The Mall, Sligo. In conjunction with The Yeats Mile project, the theme of the artwork was centered around the relationship between the two Yeats brothers; William B. Yeats and Jack B. Yeats. The project enabled pupils to observe and critique site specific public art in their local community, learn about the processes involved in a project of this nature from a local practicing sculptor, and physically make the artwork which would be on display for the general public to observe. This project was linked to action research examining the question; To what extent can the creation of a public artwork in response to the art forms of William B. Yeats and Jack B. Yeats enhance pupils’ appreciation of the role of Public Art in community settings?
