Anne Stewart

Expedition

Anne Stewart is interested in a sense of place, ownership, identity, culture, and history. Stewart’s interest in these elements derives from her experience as a child growing up in Belfast. The rejection and isolation she encountered was simply because she was a Catholic living in a predominantly Protestant area. Stewart never felt a part of this community or felt a sense of pride or belonging. Her family moved to Shannon in 1973 and Stewart has adopted County Clare as her home now.

Through a series of interviews, she identified a subject of interest, exploring and investigating the lives of the working class boat people who live near and on the rivers surrounding Limerick city. The artist researched the livelihoods and community in the context of significant social events related to their lives on the river. With particular focus placed on the expertise and navigational skills of the boating community.

Anne Stewart’s work is informed by the making of community audio recordings. In so doing, Stewart came to understand their sense of identity and belonging, through their occupation and use of the river on a daily basis. Her work encompasses the use of G.P.S. systems, fisherman’s maps, video, artefacts and photography. Emphasising the sense of ownership, identity, culture, and the history that this community values.
