Maud

“You make beautiful poetry out of what you call your unhappiness and are happy in that. Marriage would be such a dull affair: Poets should never marry. The world should thank me for not marrying you”. (Maud Gonne)

My work is inspired by a personal fascination with the relationship between W.B. Yeats and Maud Gonne, a story of unrequited love spanning almost three decades. Themes of loss, regret and grief express Yeats passionate yet poignant response, finding powerful artistic expression through his poetry. My narrative revolves around their story and explores the complexity of their relationship as it unfolded over time. This narrative is revealed through the layering, interaction and use of a series of everyday objects.
