Ana Goodman

Ostriching

Ana Goodman’s recent body of work constructs an intimate portrait of an isolated person in the digital age. She recontextualises images to fit an imagined narrative of modern apathy. Goodman presents this narrative through a series of ambiguous figurative paintings that show a reclusive, apathetic, mysterious side of human behaviour.

This behaviour is expressed through the medium of painting, wallowing in the materiality of the oil. The intentional dramatization of these scenes contrasts with the mundane subject. Goodman deliberately focuses on details of gestures, such as presenting the soles of the feet, to evoke a sense of intimacy with the subject. Her paintings force the viewer to examine these scenes of apathy which can feel uncomfortable. The recurring motif of the rug acts as a safe, sedentary reference point amid the ambiguity of the figures.
