This work aims to display how as Irish women, we are seeing and repeating actions of popular American platforms and celebrities we follow online. Through poses and phrases, we post regurgitated material and nonsensical words on our own social media accounts without fully understanding the meaning behind what we are posting.
As a young female user of social media, the artist has collected the results of the mindless scrolling women do on a regular basis, which is then displayed through their photographs they post online. Many photographs are also inspired by the words which follow hashtags posted beneath the photograph. Through the collection of this information, it led her to think about what if the roles were reversed of what we so commonly identify online, and if popular American social media platforms were to embrace an Irish female’s cultures and habits through their aesthetically pleasing photographs.
The artist has created a photography installation to not only parody, but to highlight the information and opinions you can subconsciously gather from a minute glance through social media. The photographs have been heavily influenced by the theory of bedroom culture, the idea of the “selfie”, popular hashtags, and traditions unique to women in Ireland.
