Stabbings, danger, scumbags and knackers were words that came to mind whenever anyone mentioned Limerick city. When I received my acceptance letter for my place in Limerick School of Art & Design I was both excited and terrified. Excited to move from the dry countryside to the city and terrified that I would get a random knife into the back of my head.

It took me five minutes to realise where ever these words came from, they couldn’t be further from the truth.

I feel strongly about Limerick and these negative perceptions of the city. However, my experience is that this city is different from other Irish cities for very specific reasons; social, economic, political, historical and above all comical. Through exploring these routes and also my day to day experience of interactions with people from both inside and outside the city I feel that the potential in this body of work will show Limerick in a unique but positive light, embracing and accepting its flaws and championing its strengths through humour.
