This is a typographic exploration of Neue Kabel, a geometric sans-serif typeface with strong modernist roots. The aim was to create an engaging and informative type specimen that showcases the versatility and personality of the font across its wide range of different weights.
The deliverables take the form of nine individual zines, each dedicated to one weight of Neue Kabel. When folded, each zine functions as a compact, accessible guide to the typeface’s design features, including its letterforms, spacing, and use in layout. When unfolded, the zines transform into large-format posters, acting as bold type specimen sheets that emphasise visual impact and scale. This dual function reflects the flexibility of the typeface, structured yet expressive.
The design approach was minimal and type-focused, allowing the characteristics of Neue Kabel to shine. Each zine uses a consistent grid structure, clear hierarchy, and limited colour palette to keep attention on the type. The format and structure were chosen to encourage physical interaction, prompting the viewer to engage with the content both as a reader and as a designer.
This project explores not just the visual qualities of a typeface, but also how form and function can be integrated into printed design. It also allowed for experimentation with print, folding, and layout as methods of enhancing typographic storytelling. By presenting the same typeface across different weights in separate zines, the project highlights the range and adaptability of Neue Kabel in a way that is both educational and visually compelling.
Should I Stay or Should I Go? explores the ongoing issue of youth emigration from Ireland. Faced with rising living costs, a housing crisis, and limited career opportunities, many young Irish people are questioning their future here. This project aims to highlight the personal and societal impact of this trend through a multi-platform campaign.
The outcome includes a motion graphics, a series of posters, social media posts, and a printed booklet. Each format presents data, quotes, and statistics in a visually engaging, typographic-led style. The animation serves as a dynamic introduction, designed for online sharing to quickly capture attention. Posters and social assets expand the campaign’s reach in both physical and digital spaces, while the booklet offers a more in-depth look at the causes and consequences of youth emigration.
A unified visual identity ties the campaign together, using a bold, high-contrast colour palette, structured grids, and consistent typography. Each piece is designed to feel immediate and impactful, with visual cues that reflect movement, disconnection, and uncertainty, echoing the emotional weight of leaving or staying.
By combining motion, print, and digital media, this project creates multiple entry points for engagement. It speaks directly to young Irish audiences while also inviting a broader public to reflect on how these issues affect the country’s future. Through accessible, thought-provoking design, Should I Stay or Should I Go? encourages awareness and conversation around one of Ireland’s most pressing social challenges.
