‘The Imagination must be given not wings but weights’ – Henry Adams
Selection, attachment and the distribution of specific materials in space are the fundamental issues surrounding this series of work. I place particular emphasis on the subconscious levels involved in the instinctual processes of material based art. Pushing the boundaries of three dimensional objects responds to the current state of painting in the ‘post medium’ condition. Although this work is dominantly sculptural, the essence of painting is still very much there, regarding the choice of colouring, surfaces, and positioning of one element in relation to another. Meaning is generated through the visual language that is developed by the opposing values of the selected items. The composition is shaped by the individual works relationship to space. The use of found objects and their manipulated forms provide a stimulus for creating a bizarre optical environment for the viewer to observe and interact with.
