‘In times of political upheaval and uncertainty, people turn to poems to make sense of the world. It resonates with those looking for understanding and is a good way of exploring complex, difficult emotions and uncertainty.’
Poetry is traditionally seen as something elitist, inaccessible and stuffy. This project focuses on challenging this visual perception of poetry as a means to make it something edgier, more accessible, and overall less cringy as an art form. The magazine ‘Poetry- Look Again’ has been designed to promote poetry aimed at young people, alongside a video promo, poster series and merchandise, in an effort to change the minds of those who hate it.
The first edition features a selection of poems based on the theme of hope, to act as a remedy to the current turbulent situation worldwide. Each poster is designed to grab attention first, and realise it as poetry second. To help with this, poets’ first names have been used, to delay preconceptions many people have from school. Visually the posters are different to respect the variety poetry has to offer.
