Earth World
Earth World responds to the theme of technology as a form of escapism. In our society it is common practice for people to avoid responsibility by escaping to another form of reality via their digital devices. I explore these issues concerning the self in the modern realms of cyber realities.
The piece is shot from the first person perspective to encourage the viewer to associate with the role of the main character. The reason for this is that the topic area is one that applies to pretty much everyone.
Joe acts as the guide to the piece and appears at first to be a friendly character but as the piece progresses, he becomes more and more malevolent. This transition mirrors our relationship to the digital world. On the surface it seems delightful and harmless however there is an underlying sense of something deeply sinister.
The look and feel of the piece is quite glitched and absurd. The colours are deep and saturated to give this effect and although the piece is shot mostly in live action, the end result is quite unrealistic. I feel this is appropriate given that the unremitting advances in technology have the present appearing utterly dystopian.
