What is Loneliness?
“What is loneliness?” is a campaign addressing and explaining the concept of
loneliness. According to recent studies conducted within the European union,
one in five Irish adults report feeling lonely most or all the time.1
Each design decision considers authenticity above all else. The rough, hand-
drawn illustrative style tackles the often raw and ugly feelings that arise with
loneliness and presents them with a sense of empathy. The use of handwritten
typography highlights the commonality of loneliness.
Postcards are used as the primary medium of the design campaign relating to the
Loneliness Award Week organized by the leading loneliness charity, Marmalade
Trust. The medium was specifically chosen to stand out among a digital
landscape. The tangible and personable nature of giving and receiving a postcard
lends itself to the topic, allowing for the message to reach a wider audience
within the spaces they feel most comfortable in; their homes.
Supplementary material in the form of a poster, scroll and short animation aims
to further reinforce the message across a variety of mediums.
