Fashion Design

Emma Smyth

Willed to Cynthia

My graduate collection is inspired by the sinister relationship between porcelain dolls and their connection with demonic spirits.

I used a wide variety of fabrics and prints within my collection. Mixing contemporary Gingham and striped prints with traditional florals. My first three looks are a mixture of intense reds and soft pinks with red stripes and gingham prints. Red knitted fabric was chosen as its raw edge has a lovely texture to it and contributes to my story. Classical floral prints were meaningful throughout the collection, channelling the innocent girly side of my theme. My second three looks are a mixture of yellows and pinks whilst also incorporating stripes, Gingham and a old style woven floral pattern. Yellow brocade is also included in my final three outfits. Embroidered words on my garments show the intrusive nature of the story.

The base of my looks have enclosed seams, whilst gathered raw edges are significant on the outer space of the garment showing the destruction of the powerful possessive spirit within the doll. Exaggerated shoulders are an important feature in my collection. Combined with tulle underdresses, an oversized and eerie aesthetic is exhibited. This collection has been designed towards Autumn/Winter 2020.
