Print Contemporary Practice

Eithne McGill

Swim or Sink Below

The work revolves around the art of repetition with regard to the management of wellbeing. The use of repetitive writing came from the Eastern meditative practice derived from Zen Buddhism, shodō (calligraphy). The writing method was used as a means of venting emotions, exploring how one can move on from the feelings associated with those specific words. The words used were taken from the last line in one of my haikus and was adopted into a mantra.

The haiku describes the everyday mental struggle of getting out of bed in the morning. A water metaphor was employed, the experience of wellbeing viewed as ‘treading water’. Some days your head would be bobbing above the surface, other days you can barely keep it afloat, and sometimes it feels like you are drowning –a cycle that keeps repeating itself throughout life.

While making the work, things that surrounded and affected me got absorbed into the work, making themselves known through the gestures and mark-making; the recordings of my emotions. Charcoal was chosen as the writing implement for its elemental quality. It is soft and fine, easily transferable from one surface to the next as a smudge. Just as the littlest of things can rub off and impact me, the charcoal can do the same to others, but in a physical way.

Welcome

Welcome to RALLY the Limerick School of Art & Design Graduate Show of 2021 featuring the work of final year LSAD Graduates from Animation & Motion Design, Creative Broadcast & Film Production, Ceramic Design, Creative Media and Design, Digital Animation Production, Fashion Design, Fashion & Textiles for Product & Costume, Game Art & Design, Graphic Design Communication, Music Technology & Production, Painting, Photography Film Video, Print Contemporary Practice, Sculpture & Combined Media and Professional Masters of Education in Art and Design with Digital Media.

We chose RALLY to define this year characterising our collective student spirit. To rally is to rouse and come together to renew an effort. Rally is a call to action that is strong and celebratory. Our RALLY is an online celebration of a cohesive community.

Limerick School of Art and Design Graduate Show 2021 takes the form of an online showcase to celebrate the resilience, creativity and brilliance of our final year students. Our LSAD Graduate Showcase is a platform for our graduates and their work, and is part of a growing LSAD archive of student work now in its 7th edition. This year we also commissioned three films to document and celebrate the work of our students across the three Departments

For the second time we present our graduate work solely on virtual platforms. The shock of the pandemic has faded and now we reflect our interaction with the world in new ways. Achieving the learning outcomes in ways that would have seemed impossible previously.     It has been a tremendous challenge for our students and staff to adapt to these new circumstances. We are overwhelmed by the creativity and tenacity of our students who have accomplished so much in these constrained circumstances.

We would like to thank all those who helped make it happen this year in challenging circumstances. We applaud each of our dedicated Academics, our ever reliant Technical Team, Administrators and support staff, most importantly the 2021 graduates.
