Áine O’Donnell

“ Lánúin Phósta “ - A married couple

Áine’s graduate collection explores the marriage of her grandparent’s in 1960’s Ireland. Falling in love in 1960’s Ireland was a delicate dance, woven with the threads of tradition and the comings of modernity. Áine’s granny being a hairdresser and her grandad being a stained-glass artist meant creativity flew through the veins of them both. Áine has created a collection that morphs together the delicate details of her granny’s femininity and elegance, with the structural concept of marriage and being wife. She wanted the collection to be a testament to the strength, love and growth throughout her grandparent’s marriage. Áine’s design choices incorporate structural shapes and complex panelling which are heavily influenced by the intricate detailing within her grandads stained glass work. The fabrics she used are upcycled wedding dresses, silk chiffon, duchess satin and silk taffeta. The choice of fabrics were influenced by the old saying ‘something old , something new, something borrowed and something blue’ .  The colours are a reference to her grandparents old wedding photos and also the colour sage and cream are neutral, calm, and relaxing colours which are associated with purity and elegance.
