To what extent Digital Technology can be used to enhance creativity in the Art & Design classroom
This research project was undertaken to study to what extent digital technology can be used to enhance creativity in the Art & Design classroom. The project was undertaken with a group of twelve fifth year art students, in an all boys secondary school, during a placement of ten weeks. Students began by using cameras and taking their own photographs in their locality. They then used selected software programs to edit this material and create alternative options for screen print designs.
In addition to the design process, there were a range of different methodologies used throughout the project, to enhance student learning and reflection on work in progress, including interviews, questionnaires, surveys, voice recordings and reflective journals.
The key findings that emerged from the research project were;
How the role of digital photography was used as an aid for research in the classroom, the attitudes from towards digital media in the curriculum from the staff and students and the effects that field trips can have on students’ projects.
The overall findings can relate to the need for increased investment in ICT in schools in
accordance with the Investment Policy of 2008. Schools need to be digitally equipped before curriculum requires digital input.
