Our Town: Animated Stories

This short course project entailed choosing a site-specific location within the students’ hometown, creating a story based upon the town’s history (fictional or factual) in which the students themselves would be a character alongside a drawn animated character. The students worked collaboratively in groups of threes’ or twos’ throughout this project developing their storyline through storyboarding, script-writing and character development. The students negotiated the poses that they needed for their characters, and were photographed in several shots, creating a seamless transition of the frames for stop-motion. The animated characters which they drew using a variety of mediums were also developed to show actions/reactions to the story in which they were taking part. The students used acrylics to paint their scenes individually – which provided the background for their group’s animation. Throughout this scheme the students developed an understanding and familiarity with the use of cameras and tripods for taking their own photographs for the stop-motions and became equipped with the knowledge of what is involved in creating a good stop-motion animation with flowing transitions.
