An Investigation of a Place Post Fire
My work is based on a now-disused site located on a cutaway bog in the midlands which was previously a concrete-pipe factory and accommodation facility for seasonal bog workers. These workers were involved in the mining of peat as a fuel of domestic homes and power generation. The pipes made in the pipe factory were used for drainage of the production fields. The work examines elements of the site as they have been left. The site was connected to the industry of fire therefore I see it as a representation of an environment where fire is absent as the use of carboniferous fuels wanes due to the move away from the burning of fossil fuels, and in turn the impending disappearance of the fireplace in the home. The imagery is an attempt to capture the isolation, coldness and lack of life in an existence without fire. This impending change from traditional fuels will render meaningless the Irish proverb “níl aon tinteán mar do thinteán féin” which is the way of saying there’s no place like home in the Irish language, as the home is therein represented by the fireplace.
