InterCranium is a 3 minute long animated short following American soldier, Anderson as he traverses the dense jungle of south Vietnam. Separated, from his squad he is maimed in a vicious tiger attack and must find his way back, navigating the hostile environment of the jungle through a perspective that is distorted by the damage done through the tiger attack.
This film incorporated a wide variety of different visual styles. I took inspiration from the animation and background styles found in Gennady Tartakovsky’s wok in “Primal “ to create a grounded vision of reality that would be contrasted in the later sequences. I played with line wight and shape language to create a impression of a forest where each element is solid and focused. As the short progressed I used a sketchier, unrefined style and a more fluid background style, based on watercolour illustrations. This was done to visually convey Anderson’s lack of familiarity over his surrounding and to show the potential danger around each shadowy corner. The final sequence makes use of a vibrant lineless style. I took inspiration from Vietnamese tiger illustrations to create my designs and from that I mirrored that saturated look through the soldier and the background design to create a visually a more graphical and visually interesting world. I also reduced the amount of details so it would be more animation friendly.
I used Toon Boom harmony to create the entirety of the animation for this project. To do this I had to adapt to an entirely different workflow for comping and camera movements however in completing this project I have fallen in love with the program and am exited to work more with it in the future
