Students were asked to create an etching based on a poem that interested them during their English studies in an attempt to narrow the gap between word and image. A poem in itself is a work of art offering us rich imagery with numerous possibilities for visual interpretation. Using poetry as the source of inspiration is an ideal opportunity for cross-curricular collaboration.
The students will be encouraged to focus on the quality of the line and asked to consider how the line suggests movement, energy, emotion? How can you suggest depth and perspective with line? Will they consider using Geometric or Organic line? The final image must translate into an etching that will be displayed alongside an artist statement and the poem itself.
