A typography project which preserves traditional graphics and sees time invested in becoming a reference point for creating design with an aged aesthetic.

This was a completely selfish project in the sense that it was in my own interest to pursue these graphics, harvest them and learn what I can in order to better my own work. I also treated the time creating this modest archive as an opportunity to work on my own typographic skills and create a tailored layout.

For my final year project, I have researched a wide range of graphics from various fields of vintage design, from crayons and cigarette packaging in the early 20th century, to graphics based off pennant flags from vintage paint cans. This project is a unique, personalised reference point which can be utilised to inspire designs with a certain timeless look.

We formally welcome you to ‘be.cause_’, the Limerick School of Art & Design Graduate Show of 2017 featuring the work of final year LSAD Graduates from Painting, Printmaking & Contemporary Practice, Sculpture & Combined Media, Ceramic Design, Creative Multimedia, Fashion Design, Fashion Knit & Textiles and Visual Communications.

This show is the culmination of the last four years of discipline introduction, skill-building, research and experimentation which has finally led the graduates here; synthesising all they’ve learned and absorbed during their time in LSAD. 2017 has been a historic year, peppered with student exhibitions and awards both national and international. This year is the first graduating year of the Fashion Knit & Textiles cohort, culminating in a memorable show that featured a wonderful collaboration between students on the programme and students on the Creative Multimedia programme in LSAD Clonmel.

This type of collaboration is one of the most important things graduates will take with them. It’s not only important within the context of an art college, but remains a crucial part of the wider world context of art and design. Increasingly, the creative professions need graduates as flexible, adaptable individuals, capable of working across a variety of media and disciplines. For the last four years they’ve all been working together, and we hope that they continue to stay in touch, and continue to build interdisciplinary links as they advance into their careers.
